An intellectual, as concerning social and ideological issues, must necessarily determine the role of the institution of the Church in society and culture. This applies also to the confessional church or denomination with which he identifies himself. The greater is the place of religion in the individual search for a specific thinker, the higher is the urgency of this issue. The Russian thought of the XIX century offered at least three options (traditions, paradigms, matrices), each of the which defined its specific type of religious and philosophical discourse. They are: update cash spiritual и cultural capacity of the Orthodox Church (Dostoevsky); protoecumenism and «free theocracy» (Vladimir Solovyov); non-confessional and supranational Christianity (Leo Tolstoy). These three projects find their successors among modern domestic authors considering religion as the most important factor of personal and social identity.

Keywords: Church, the Orthodoxy, Dostoevsky, Vladimir Solovyov, Leo Tolstoy, personality, confessionalism, free theocracy, rationalization, ecumenism.
