The given work is a description of some aspects of the complex, multifaceted and controversial problem of the presence of various religious images in educational projects considered within the framework of the RFFI–DFG grant under the project “Image of Religion in Russia: Educational Projects and the Construction of Religious Tolerance” (2015–2017). The term “religion” in this text is understood in an extremely general sense as a relation with “indefinite”, distinguished from “supernatural” and “sacred” as “established” forms. Historically, there are three forms of religious education, beginning with the ancient oral tradition of transferring the skills of “overseeing the undetermined”. In urban cultures, compulsorily established forms of “overseeing the undetermined” arise, including the common “science of the fear of God”. The third form is domination of the press, “enlightenment”, science and philosophy, sometimes leading to the replacement of religious education with secular education, especially in the “Soviet era”, which, in turn, led to the modern triumvirate of religious (“confessional”), Study of the Religion (“non-confessional”) and moral education, which form tolerant members of the Russian society.
