The paper contains data on the phenomenon of icons renewals, which in recent years were of a massive nature. The article for the first time presents the systematization of the ideas of possible reasons for icons renewals that existed in the 20th – early 21st century. The authors of the paper tried to find a certain pattern in this phenomenon on the basis of available information. In the first part of the paper the “natural” causes of such events (deception, rubbing of an icon by any composition, reaction of paints or salary of an icon to some external factor, the effect of atmospheric electricity, fire, mold, etc.) are analyzed. Attention is drawn to the fact that the cause of the massive outbreak of icons renewals in the early 1920s was the drought and the ensuing famine. In the second part of the paper the authors conduct statistical studies of the entire existing sample of icons renewals for detecting relationship with various cosmophysical, socio-political and climatic factors. The others come to the conclusion that there is a statistically significant negative correlation between the number of updated icons and the Russian Empire/USSR GDP. This means that a decline in the level of GDP could most likely affect the increase in the number of icons renewals and, perhaps, other miracles.

Keywords: icons, renewal, religion, religious symbol, miracle, analysis.
