The article deals with the works by Alexander Nikolaevich Vinogradov (a hieromonk Alexy; 1845–1919 or 1920?) on the history of translation of the Bible into English. The paper summarizes Vinogradov's biography based on printing sources and analyses the value of his works for national literature. The published works are divided into two big parts – articles and notes of various short archeographic plots and church study of local lore, and what Vinogradov generally called “the scientific and missionary report”. The specific feature of the Vinogradov’s works is especially abstract character of the majority of his works. In particular, this also explains unreasonably large volume of “The history of the Bible in the East”: from rather compact composition on the newest translations of the Bible on Chinese and other east languages it has gradually turned into boundless conglomeration of all record of China and the East in general.
Another important feature of his works is a lack of questioning attitude to the reviewed text. “The history of the English-American Bible” still remains the only monographic research on the history of English-language Bible translations in national literature. However, importance of the works by Vinogradov is not so much what he writes as how he does that. The reviewing of the Vinogradov’s works translating the freshest and fundamental samples of the English scientific literature into Russian anticipates reception of critical Bible Studies in Russia after 1991 almost for century.
