Large actors such as states, religious and educational organizations strive to provide society with tools for moral development. One of the tools is the “Basics of Religious Cultures and Secular Ethics” course introduced in 2010. The course is a variant of non-confessional religious education. The key aspects of the introduction of the “Basics of Religious Cultures and Secular Ethics” course were considered mainly within the framework of pedagogy. An attempt to study this educational component from anthropological perspective was less frequent. This article examines the main problems of studying of education in modern domestic and foreign ethnology, and suggests a study tool applicable to forms of non-confessional religious education. This tool was tested during field research in the regions of the Southern Urals in 2012–2017. The number of organizations in which the studies were conducted included educational institutions, religious organizations, and schools. The article suggests tools for effective studying of these organizations, as well as aspects and those units of observation, which a scientist needs to consider when visiting. Studying of these aspects makes it possible to reveal religious and ethnic identity of the course participants in terms of religiously oriented subjects teaching. The results of the study help to understand what factors influence the choice of the course modules, and also to determine the place of the religious factor in the modern Russian school.
