The subject of the research in this article is the specificity of the reflection of the Confucian cult of xiao in the legend “Temple of Loyalty” included in the “Manchu” cycle of the collection “Chinese Legends”, compiled and published by the Harbin orientalist P.V. Shkurkin. The author of the article, based on the text of this legend, processed by P.V. Shkurkin, traces the features of the assimilation by the Manchus of the religious and philosophical ideas and traditions of the Han population of China during the reign of the Qing dynasty, which subsequently contributed to the almost complete “dissolution” of the Manchu culture among Han. As a result of the study, the author concludes that the collection of folklore among the representatives of peoples inhabiting China, carried out by Harbin ethnographers in the first half of the 20th century, was an important tool for understanding the culture of these ethnic groups, the features of their interaction and mutual influence. The author also points out that, for representatives of the Far Eastern emigrants, studying such processes and generally the culture of the peoples of China, was one of ways to preserve their own ethnocultural identity. The study of the results of the research activities of Harbin orientalists, including P.V. Shkurkin, according to the author, helps to understand the methodology and main directions of the work of the ethnographic communities in Far Eastern emigration and contributes to a more comprehensive study of the history and culture of the Russian diaspora in Manchuria.
