This article is the first to attempt a systematic examination of the Gnostic concept of martyrdom. In this context, a comparison is made between Gnostic and canonical Christianity. It is established that, despite the accusations that Gnostic and Orthodox Christians made against each other, their understanding of martyrdom actually shares many similarities. Similar to their opponents, Gnostics view martyrdom as an opportunity to demonstrate the qualities bestowed by God. In this sense, a martyr acts as a witness to the truth of the teachings they hold. Their goal is to strengthen the faith of their brothers and lead others onto the path of righteousness. This understanding of martyrdom may have been influenced by stories about philosophers who associated love of truth with suffering and death, as well as by the ancient belief that valor and strength were signs of divine favor. Regarding the voluntary nature of martyrdom, the Gnostics, like their opponents, generally adhered to the Stoic doctrine of equanimity, condemning both the cowardice of the weak and the recklessness of fanatics. However, the article emphasizes the difference between Gnostic and canonical Christianity. It is shown that in Gnosticism we do not find the doctrine of vicarious sacrifice that is characteristic of the official church. Although Gnostics also have the notion of paying for sin, for them martyrdom is nothing more than the price that a martyr pays for the opportunity to bear witness to the truth. The results of this study are significant not only for rethinking Gnosticism but also for gaining a deeper understanding of other branches of Christianity.
